Remembering Freddie Mercury

Music fans and google users know that today would have been Freddie Mercury’s 85th birthday.

Lead singer of  the eternally loved rock band Queen, Mercury was known for his flamboyant stage presence, powerful vocals (4 octave range!!), and deep lyrics. Mercury was titled ” Britian’s first Asian Rock Star”, one of the most influencial Asian leaders of all time, one of the greatest male singers of all time, and one of Rock’s all-time greatest performers by the media and fans alike.

Unfortunately, his life and the potential of his talent was cut short when Mercury died of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS, the day after releasing his condition to the public. He was 45 yrs old.

In celebration of his worldwide influence here are some of Queen’s greatest hits.

A tribute by Young the Giant – appearing on campus THIS THURSDAY Sept. 8th at Metcalf Hall in the George Sherman Union. Show starts at 9pm!!

Comeback Attack

Recently, I’ve noticed many of our favorite artists,  though still in heavy rotation on our ipods and radio stations, have fallen off the new release charts. For some it has been several years since releasing a new single or album. But, don’t fret! Many of these artists including Britney Spears, Kelly Rowland, Radiohead, and Panic at the Disco are coming back strong with new releases. Will this be the start of a rapid “comeback” trend? Will Nsync become our favorite band of boys once again? Will 3LW make a new club hit?

Only time will tell. and I will be waiting with open arms<3

What Sound Does a Monster Make?

Vampires, Wolf men, and creatures from every deep, dark and dreary crevice of the world have recently made a huge impact. From feature films to beverages, monsters are taking over every aspect of pop culture. They have even been known to inspire fashion on the runway. Ultimately this trend is helping everyone explore their darkness- nightmares, fears, and their own inner creature.  Today, my little monsters,  I wanna ask, “what sound does a monster make?” Though I can’t give you one definitive answer, maybe these artists can.

Beware. You’re in for a Scare.

Some Like It Hot

Unfortunately, I am not partying in Cancun or the Caribbean. I won’t be able to scream I’m in MIAMI!!! with LMFAO playing in the background. In fact, I’m not going anywhere warm at all…

So in order to endure the chilly Boston mornings and the freezing nights, here’s my HOT spring break playlist. Okay so basically its just my favorite songs with the word “hot” or “heat” in them. Nevertheless, feel free to enjoy these songs with candy colored beverages with little floral umbrellas (non-alcoholic if you’re underage, kiddo), let all your stress from school melt away, and, if you’re like me, pretend it’s not 20 degrees outside.

Let’s get it started with everyone’s favorite boy band, 98 Degrees!! Does it feel like the early 2000′s yet?

98 Degrees – Heat It Up

Nelly – Hot in Herre

The Power Station – Some Like It Hot

Dee-Lux – Hot Hot Hot

The Supremes – Heatwave

Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell Williams- Drop It Like It’s Hot

Across the Universe

Though I’ve never been able to travel the world (or venture very far from Boston), I have the amazing opportunity to explore the world through music. Music is a bridge between the people of many cultures, allowing performers to speak messages to listeners on a local and international level. Universal desires, such as to love, to have friendship, and to get it down on da dance floor, transcend the language barrier. With around two weeks until my study abroad application is due, I recently revisited my international music library and rediscovered my love for music from around the world.

Now, allow me to take you around the world in less than 80 minutes with these songs.

The Caribbean

Sereani – Skip to Ma Lou

Latin America

Don Omar & Lucenzo – Danza Kuduro

Africa

P Square – No One Like You

Australia

Birds of Tokyo – Plans

Korea

T.O.P & G.D. -Knock Out

France

Yelle – Je Veux Te voir

Canada

Tegan and Sara – Hop a Plane

The Stress-Free Playlist

Mid-term exams, projects, presentations, bills, annoying boyfriends/girlfriends, the lack of an annoying boyfriend/girlfriend, bitter-cold weather, clothes that shrink in the dryer, one lost glove are only a few of the dreadfully stressful aspects of everyday life that cause one stress.

So in order to relieve my stress I listen to songs like these. Plain and simple, they help the billions of stress-causing things in life a little less stress causing.

The Beatles – Blackbird

I just like the birds chirping in the background and the lovely acoustic sounds….

Norah Jones – Sunrise

The Shins – New Slang

For some unexplainable reason this song makes me want to skip through a field of flowers….

What songs do you add to your “Stress-Free Playlist?” Feel free to post them on BU Central’s Facebook page here:

Reppin Da Hood

Hello Everyone! This week I’m here to introduce The Hood Internet, a Chi-Town based duo specialized in producing the amazing audio ear candy known to many as the “mashup”. Mixing various forms Hip Hop, Indie, Pop, Rock and Techno, The Hood Internet creates a clean blend of sounds that can be enjoyed by everyone. I especially enjoy their minimalist approach -usually blending no more than three songs at a time – because it reduces the “WTH!?, who exactly am I listening to?????” confusion that sometimes can plague the art of mashup.

What’s even better, all of The Hood Internet’s mixtapes – a total of 18 since 2007 – can be downloaded FO FREE on their website http://www.thehoodinternet.com/

Did I mention they have a website that combines their two loves: Mexican food and music? Well, they do. At their website http://albumtacos.tumblr.com/ , the duo ABX (Aaron) and STV SLV (Steve) incorporate Mexican food into iconic album covers. Yeah.

And of course I saved the best news for last! The Hood Internet will be at BU Central tomorrow @ 9pm, FO FREE!!!!!!

Well enough out of me. I’ll let the music speak for its self.

The Chaotic Harmony Playlist

This is Tangela, one of the eager/confused new members of the happy BUC family.

I’m here to share one of my best kept secrets: The Chaotic Nirvana Experiment. The Experiment begins as the subject listens to fast-paced and electrifying music. I call this element “chaos.”  The subject will follow this with element “breathe:” a medium-paced music mix. The subject will conclude his or her experience by listening to slow-paced, calming music mix: element “harmony.”

By heightening the subject’s senses with element “chaos” and transitioning with “breathe,” the element “chaos” works at it’s greatest capacity. My hypothesis is that if the subject completes the steps correctly, he or she will reach the ultimate level of relaxation- in addition to achieving inner harmony and tranquility. Cool huh?

Okay…..so inner harmony and tranquility probably won’t be achieved. Especially because you are 7,000 pages behind in reading, you have 3 papers to write, and a power point presentation to present. Oh, did I mention all of those things are due tomorrow?

But hey, try it out. You may be the lucky person to find inner harmony. If not, at least you listened to some good music.

Feel free to comment on this post if my hypothesis was correct or if you would like to share you’re own Chaotic Harmony playlist.
