Free festivals are all kinds of awesome, ch’yeah?

Josh here, back after a long and eventful summer that involved me hitting up Bonnaroo for the first (and hopefully not my last) time. I became obsessed with the likes of The Naked and Famous, The Rapture, and Digitalism. I may or may not have routinely blasted Selena Gomez’s new album in the late-night hours while speeding down the highway in Delaware. Music guided my most memorable moments this summer, and it was finally at the third annual Virgin Freefest this past weekend that I was able to officially cap off my summer.

Two Door Cinema Club playing a stage at Virgin Freefest 2011, as taken by The Baltimore Sun

This being my third time at the 100% free festival held the past few years at the legendary Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD, I was well prepared to have an incredible day with the 50,000 other attendees. This year’s lineup focused mostly on dance music, which left my feet pretty sore after dancing my ass off to memorable sets from Two Door Cinema Club, Cut Copy, Calvin Harris, Empire of the Sun, Deadmau5, and several others.

Dancing on top of a muddy field with paint all over my body, I went particularly crazy during Cut Copy’s set. Feast your ears upon one of my favorites from the Australian electronic outfit, “Lights and Music.”

His name is Skrillex

Hey everyone,

So if you haven’t heard of him yet, Skrillex is a DJ thats been becoming more and more popular. He looks like this:

Lately he has been featured at festivals like Coachella, and the Snowball Festival in Colorado, and his shows are selling out bigger and bigger venues. Skrillex is kind of a mix between… um, well… I’m not exactly sure how to describe it. I’ll let him introduce himself.

Skrillex – My Name is Skrillex

I’m actually writing about him because the other day I bought tickets to his show in June, where he’ll be at the Palladium in Worcester. If you’re interested, I think tickets might still be on sale. Check out his website for ticket info.

Better go now before this guy seriously blows up. He is currently signed to mau5trap records, the label created and run by deadmau5. Since his first self-released EP (from which the above track came), he has released another EP called Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites under mau5trap records. Here’s the title track from that one, which is much more intense, aka, much more awesome!

Skrillex – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites

Annnnnd here is one more song that I just really like.

Skrillex – Cats Rats

Ok, now turn the volume up and enjoy.

Th-th-th-that’s all folks!

The Chaotic Harmony Playlist

This is Tangela, one of the eager/confused new members of the happy BUC family.

I’m here to share one of my best kept secrets: The Chaotic Nirvana Experiment. The Experiment begins as the subject listens to fast-paced and electrifying music. I call this element “chaos.”  The subject will follow this with element “breathe:” a medium-paced music mix. The subject will conclude his or her experience by listening to slow-paced, calming music mix: element “harmony.”

By heightening the subject’s senses with element “chaos” and transitioning with “breathe,” the element “chaos” works at it’s greatest capacity. My hypothesis is that if the subject completes the steps correctly, he or she will reach the ultimate level of relaxation- in addition to achieving inner harmony and tranquility. Cool huh?

Okay…..so inner harmony and tranquility probably won’t be achieved. Especially because you are 7,000 pages behind in reading, you have 3 papers to write, and a power point presentation to present. Oh, did I mention all of those things are due tomorrow?

But hey, try it out. You may be the lucky person to find inner harmony. If not, at least you listened to some good music.

Feel free to comment on this post if my hypothesis was correct or if you would like to share you’re own Chaotic Harmony playlist.

Deadmau5 comes to BU Central

No, he’s not really coming here (at least not any time soon), I just needed to get your attention. Sorry I got you all excited for nothing (but you should have seen the look on your face!). Well, since you’ve already come this far, you might as well keep reading.

Deadmau5 is one of the few who is crossing over to main stream in America (How could he not with that epic mouse head?). He’s been dropping lots of new songs at live shows or via ustream. I’ve collected some of my favorite newer tracks here. If you like the stuff Deadmau5 has produced before, I’m sure you’ll love these too!

- Animal Rights (This one isn’t that new, but still great. Deadmau5 and Wolfgang Gartner team up to produce one of my favorite electronic songs out there

- Raise Your Weapon (This one bends all the rules: deadmau5 plays dubstep! In my opinion, this is one of the sickest songs deadmau5 as released. The first half is really slow, but the second half just goes crazy!)

- Sofi Needs A Ladder (This is a new version of an instrumental song deadmau5 produced last year called ‘You Need A Ladder’. This one features vocals from a singer named Sofi. Here’s the official version with intro and everything)

- Right This Second (Deadmau5 recently played a live show with Pete Tong, radio DJ from BBC Radio 1, and dropped this new track from one of his latest singles. This is probably my favorite song in this blog)

OK, I hope that’s enough to satisfy all your Deadmau5 needs for the day. Crank up the volume, turn up the bass and enjoy!

See you next Friday,
Tim
