Getting Melodies Out Of My Head

Haldo adventurers,

The past two days, I’ve had two songs stuck in my head like no one’s business. They really have nothing in common, except that they both have awesome saxophone parts. In hopes of getting these melodies out of my brain, I’d like to share them with you!

1) Caspa & Rusko: Girl From Codeine City (FabricLive 37)

2) Dev: In The Dark

And now that you’re probably fast asleep, because regardless of how much I like those songs, listening to them makes me very sleepy…

I’ll leave you with this. Its another song that I’ve been pretty addicted to this week. It doesn’t have a sax, but its still great.

3) Silvio Ecomo & Chuckie: Moombah (Afrojack Remix)

Happy Humpday everyone!

Random Music Video Wednesday!

Hello, Everybody!

So I wanted to write a blag today with a relevant theme and make it all nice and whatnot, but that idea really didn’t pan out. Today is hump day, and honestly, I don’t have the energy to write an awesomely well thought out blog today. I bet you feel pretty much the same right now, huh? I bet that what you really want to do right now is to watch some awesome, possibly funny videos, and then maybe take a well deserved nap. Welp, I think that is a great idea! I’ve been doing some research for you friends, and I’ve found some stuff that I think you’ll really take a liking to… So sit back, relax, and enjoy!

1) Kid Cudi – Day ‘N’ Night

I’ve heard this song a bajillion times, but I’ve never seen this video. Maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for some good animation, but this was surprisingly amazing.

2) LMFAO – Sexy and I Know It

WARNING: SHOCKINGLY AWKWARD, YET KINDA HILARIOUS CONTENT AHEAD. You have been warned…

3) Its Time for the Perculator

These guys can seriously move. And this song goes better with their dancing than the original one (at least I think so). Prepare to slightly chuckle your face off!

I hope that this has helped give you the energy you need to push through today, and make it over the the other side of the hump (day, that is)!

Live long and prosper,
Tim

…….and Weezy is Free

Yeah, you were probably wondering when I was gonna stop talking about Lil Wayne. Well today, ain’t that day. Weezy is free. Finally. But he walks free now with new responsibility shoved into his arms. He reported that he started writing lyrics in jail, and most of the hip-hop community is expecting his return to be glorious. Well this week we were treated to his first recorded verses since his release. And what do we think? Check it out below.
P.S. Please ignore anything Birdman says, as he is a terrible rapper. Only focus on Wayne’s parts.

Anyway, all Weezy aside, recently my girlfriend showed me this fantastic band that you may or may not know about. They are called Minus the Bear, and are freaking amazing. They are coming to Bostonon December 7th, so if you like this, you should definitely go.

That’s all I got today. Happy Weezy Wednesday!

The Weekly Special

As of now, I think everyone knows to expect a musical gem from Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Friday series that is released on his website every week. He is single-handedly changing the way hip-hop (and quite honestly music as a whole) is being made. Almost every track has been amazing. I’ll post my favorite below just in case you haven’t heard.

But although Kanye may have started this trend, his fellow hip-hop producers have noted its influence and have hopped on the weekend bandwagon. One of them is “The One Man Band Man” himself, Swizz Beats. Swizzy has started a Monster Mondays series, two weeks in. The second installment definitely stands out to me, tell me what you think in the comments.

And just when you thought hip-hoppers could copy themselves no longer, esteemed producer Timbaland has recently announced that Timbo Thursdays is about to become a new institution. Timmy hasn’t produced anything in a while, his most famous work being with Missy Eliott and Justin Timberlake. Here’s a recent track for a quick refresher:

Now these are all good things. Artists realize the music piracy is a real viable threat to their record sales, and instead of going up in arms and pulling a Lupe, they decide to give out free music. This will hopefully become a trend in the music industry. Free music doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end of the industry; it could mean that people are more focused on good music instead of what label A&R’s tell them they should listen to. It is also interesting to note that most of the G.O.O.D. Friday tracks will be on Kanye’s new album this month. It will be worth watching to see if fans reward Kanye for his generosity by buying his album or if they take the music and run. Stay tuned.

OH AND BY THE WAY, Lil Wayne gets out of jail in a day. Let’s not forget who was instrumental in this whole free music era when the man released 1000 free songs in the time span of three years. FREE WEEZY!!!

Homegrown Hip-Hop

Boston is no stranger to homegrown hip-hop, with the young frat rapper/Asher Roth rejuvenation named Sam Adams taking the city under his wing on his flight to iTunes success.  His remix of Roth’s “I Love College” (named “I Hate College,” check it out right below) had approximately one million Youtube views when he released his EP on iTunes. “Boston’s Boy” beat out the likes of Lil Wayne and DJ Khaled to hit number one on the hip-hop charts.

Boston also claims Guru, Mattias and a whole slew of other music personalities that call this city their home. Well being that I’m from the great capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Richmond, I have decided that I’m going to show you guys some of the homegrown rappers from my neck of the woods. Hope you enjoy.

P.S. For any clarifications, where to get more by an artist, etc. hit up the comments.

“Pass Da Blunt” by P.O.$.D.

“Matty, Matty, Matty” by Matty Da Kidd

“EightOhFo” by DJ Shake feat. TD, C.Lo, and Charles R.

I gave you enough songs to listen to, so this Weezy Wednesday, I’ll just let you know that he is now in solitary confinement for having an MP3 player earlier on in the year. But he will not be spending any more time in jail. The Carter IV should be on time. Yay.

FREE WEEZY!!!

Mash-ups/FREE WEEZY

The art of the mash-up is oh-so-important in today’s music scene. Everyone wants to rap, everyone wants to have a band, everyone wants to be signed by a major record label. But the mash-up artist’s experience is a bit different. For regular artists, they want to be signed so they can sell records, and thus, get paid. But if you mix songs, you can’t sell your work. (Unless you bought the rights to it, which would be more costly and probably wouldn’t net you a profit.) Most mashers start out as just doing it for fun: DJs with a hobby, music lovers with a cool program, people with eclectic musical tastes.

I love this genre because most of these guys started out just doing what they wanted to do; no big time dreams of record labels or big sold-out arenas. Just acapellas, instrumentals, and the desire to mix and sample them. This is what music is all about, finding your niche and perfecting your skill. So to celebrate, here’s a few mixes I like:

Pretty Lights: “Hot Like Sauce”

Super Mash Bros.: “I F*cking Bleed Purple and Hold”

And of course, as my esteemed colleague Dan Donohue said, it is Weezy Wednesday so…

“Learn Chinese”

What’s up guys? I’m CJ, check out my bio for all that kind of information, because here, I’m getting straight down to the business. First off, I’d like to introduce you to my old blog, one that I had in high school. I maintain it with a friend of mine from high school named Daniel Conover, and we like to think we are rather insightful young men. There’s some good stuff on there; check it out here: Generation Nine Two.

But anyway, I’d like to introduce you guys to some music that you may or may not have heard. One of my favorite subjects of all time is hip-hop. I love the history, the language, the culture, everything about it. Being such a vast kingdom, there’s a lot out there to be discovered. So here’s a song by one of my favorite rappers, credited with being the only mainstream Chinese rapper to ever be signed. He won a series of freestyle battles on BET, and his name is Jin. This one is called “Learn Chinese.” Check it out.

P.S. One of the days I work is Wednesday, 11-12. That hour will be Weezy Wednesdays, so if you want to come listen to some Lil Wayne and rap along, come on down.
