Band Showcase: Girls

Since the release of their debut LP, Album, Girls have been on loop in my brain and on my iPod. Much to my pleasure, whilst wasting away Environmental Economics this morning I found out their new EP, Broken Dreams Club, hits stores November 22.

Led by Christopher Owens and his hypnotic vocals Girls conjures up comparisons to the likes of the Beach Boys and Elvis Costello with influence from modern indie rock and a slew pills. Both on stage and through your speakers it’s easy to get in touch with the emotions going into each and every word sung by Owens, a former member of the Children of God cult. Born in Miami, Florida and living all around the country Owens went through a miserable childhood, losing his brother because the cult didn’t believe in medicine and having his father walk out at an early age. Luckily for us as a teenager he moved to San Francisco where he met PJ White, a guitarist and producer.

On their debut album Girls does an incredible job of creating a diverse sound with everything from beautiful ballads, to driving surf rock and even a few ambient tunes. The album is laced with cries out for a father figure including the beautifully explicit “Oh I wish I had a father/Maybe then I would have turned out right” on “Lust for Life”. Halfway through the album the band does a fantastic job of diversifying the sound with “Big Bad Mean Motherfucker”, a surf rock showcase that was absolutely incredible live. Front to back (and even including the B-sides) this is one of my favorite albums of the last ten years, without a doubt. I guess I’ll have to buy a calendar so I can start counting down the days until November 22, oh wait it’s 28 that wasn’t so hard.
