The Notorious B.I.G. has left a legacy that extends far beyond his death in 1997. Since then, his songs have been remixed, sampled, and juxtaposed to the extreme, memorializing his work within the music industry as perpetually relevant and creatively unique. Here is a compilation of three mash-ups that particularly reflect the malleable nature of Biggie’s art.
First, there’s the Carter Edit of “Can I Get Witcha” by Biggie and “The Love Club” by Lorde, creating the angelic “Can I Get Witcha Love Club.” It’s the sort of song that’s perfect for a car full of jamming high-school friends and rolled down windows.
The second song, and my personal favorite, is Flume’s mix of “Insane (feat. Moon Holiday)” and Biggie’s “Juicy,” which combined create “Juicy Insane.” It’s one of those rare gems that could justifiably be played at a club with crowds of people and flashing strobe lights, or at nighttime, alone and looking out onto the glimmering Charles River.
The last mix, best categorized as “Thug Trap,” is Bro Safari’s “Scumbag” which samples from Biggie’s “Suicidal Thoughts” to create quite a thumper. It’s the perfect late-night party song to be played when people are ready to get a sweaty dance workout.
Plug these tunes into your MP3 playa and you might find yourself re-discovering the magic of B.I.G.
