As we all probably know, Vine is a popular mobile app that is used to record six-second clips of whatever the hell people feel like documenting. These “vines” are typically accompanied by a song that has some sort of correlation to the random video. Vine was created in line with the “twerk” craze, so of course women (and men) showed off their booty-shaking skills with songs like “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun Thun.”
The super-popular song from The FiNaTTicZ actually isn’t so new. The Los Angeles natives dropped the track back in early 2011, but it didn’t get heavy rotation from local hip-hop radio station POWER 106 until Spring 2012. With the reemergence of the song, The FiNaTTicZ shot a new video and subsequently watched their LA popularity rise.
After “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun” became “Vine Famous,” its popularity grew exponentially. The FiNaTTicZ’ year-old music video now has over 20 million hits on Youtube and, once I got to school this semester, people were cautioning others not to drop that “Thun Thun Thun.”
“Don’t Drop That Thun Thun Thun” is hardly the only “Vine Famous” song. “My N****a,” by YG featuring Jeezy & Rich Homie Quan and “Gas Pedal” by Sage the Gemini featuring IamSu have also gained recent popularity, all from the six-second Vine clips.
