2013 was quite a year for Hip Hop/Rap music. Pretty much every major name in the rap game came out with an album. From Jay-Z to Eminem, we were blessed to hear some new music from the people we love to hear music from.
But, if 2013 was the year for the big dogs, then let 2014 be the year of the up-and-coming.
And if it is the year of the up-and-coming, some rappers already have some catching up to do.
Topaz Jones, a student at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music (it’s a mouthful, but I think it’s worth saying), just recently came out with his debut album, The Honeymoon Suite.
Topaz actually performed here at Boston University’s BU Central just last year, but that was well before the 20-year-old rapper released his first major work.
Being the son of a musician, Topaz quickly learned how to infuse his own rap flair with his father’s Funk and R&B style. And through the different types of sounds that you’ll hear from him, you can tell that Topaz is more than just a simple rapper.
He can either come on to a slower beat like the one on “Mona Lisa Bonet”, or he can shift his rhymes towards a funky beat such as the one heard in “Blow Your Mind”.
– Notable lyrics – “Mona Lisa Bonet”:
“And that’s Faith, this Biggie,
I’m Will that’s Jada, we out here gettin’ jiggy (Gettin’ jiggy wit’ it),
I flow like Mase but I’m still thinking Diddy“
The versatility is crazy, and his knowledge of sound seeps through his music.
I was really looking forward to writing this post on Topaz Jones and I could probably talk about his music all day, but ultimately the album speaks for itself.
– Notable lyrics – “Vanilla Sky” (Feat. MoRuf)/Côte d’Ivoire:
“By the beach, by the room,
I got her singing my tunes, like,”
