Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing 21-year-old, Brit crooner, Sam Smith, at the Sinclair. Looking dapper with his undercut, hipster hairstyle, Smith shyly smiled at the crowd and introduced himself as being “from one Cambridge to another,” alluding to his hometown’s proximity to the original Cambridge. Smith opened with “Nirvana,” off of his EP – wait for it – Nirvana – which everyone should check out as they wait for his album, In the Lonely Hour. His buttery voice and unassuming stage presence immediately captured the audience, and I was definitely hooked (and to think I had almost relinquished my ticket in order to study for a midterm – school? Nah). The song list was dripping in richness; featuring his collab with producer Nile Rodgers, “Together,” a song from his EP, “Money on My Mind,” his collab with Naughty Boy, “La La La,” and the song that shot to mainstream popularity, “Latch,” a collab with electronic group Disclosure.
Sam Smith is the next big thing – I’m talking Coachella headliner, I’m talking American Idol judge. So I hope he never loses the sweetness he carries – that lovely grin making him real and tangible for his fans. Keep your eyes out, folks, and maybe you’ll get to experience the magic of the angelic-voiced cherub from Cambridge.
